BACKGROUND

Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) has introduced an amendment to the Surface Transportation Bill that would allow employers and insurance companies to deny health insurance coverage for any essential health care service that they object to on the basis of religious beliefs or moral convictions. This would not only have the potential to affect the reproductive rights of women, but would potentially limit unknown numbers of Americans from receiving a range of preventative and immediate health care services, including cancer screenings, HIV/AIDS treatment, and contraception. It opens the door for employers to refuse to offer other coverage due to "moral" objection.
