Candidate Spotlight 7-1-2022

Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) proves that every vote counts. She was first elected in 2016 by only 1,017 votes — one of the closest races in the nation. She came to Washington, DC with a proven track record, having served as governor for four years from her state.

Hassan’s razor thin margin of victory has made her the GOP's top target this year. Mitch McConnell and dark money groups have spent more money attacking Hassan than many of the other Senate Democrats up for reelection. Republicans only need to flip one seat to take back the Senate, and they have made defeating Hassan one of their main goals.

Hassan will not know her GOP opponent until after the state’s primary in September. Each one of her potential opponents will do everything they can, if they defeat her and get to the Senate, to make sure that there is NO federal law protecting abortion. Abortion rights figured prominently in Hassan’s campaign in 2016 and her support for this issue helped her defeat her 2016 opponent.

Hassan has said, “Protecting a woman's right to make her own health care decisions and ensuring access to important health services . . . is essential to the economic vitality of our families, our communities, and our nation."

In her first term she has pushed for requiring background checks for all gun sales, encouraging states to pass extreme risk laws, and banning high-capacity magazines. She has supported legislation that will close a dangerous loophole that currently allows domestic abusers to own lethal weapons. She has also worked across the aisle to push for more funding to improve the federal background check system and enforcement of gun laws.
